Be Cool This Summer! Beat the Heat!

Summer 2001

JfB is proud to sponsor several events to help area audiences keep cool during the heat of summer.
Join us on Friday, July 13, 6:30-8:00 p.m., as JfB sponsors the Monika Herzig Acoustic Project for a free, all-ages concert of originals and jazz standards as part of the "Jazz in July" series at the IU Arts Museum (the outdoor sculpture terrace).
The Monika Herzig Acoustic Project consists of Monika Herzig (piano), Peter Kienle (guitar), Tom Clark (saxes), Jack Helsley (bass), and Peter Wilhoit (drums). They will be playing selections from their recent CD Melody Without Words, plus new arrangements. Copies of the Project's recent recording, Jammin' at the Kitchen, done live at the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis, will also be available. (A limited edition, so get yours before they're gone!)
Jazz audiences perhaps know Herzig best as co-leader of the fusion jazz group BeebleBrox, who recently released their fourth CD Dominant Domain with guest saxophonist Bob Berg.  BeebleBrox has toured Germany twice and opened for such

groups as Tower of Power, Sting, Santana, Yes, and many more.  Her Acoustic Project showcases her skills as a composer and arranger, and as a jazz pianist.
Recently Herzig received an "Individual Artist Grant" from the Indiana Arts Commission in support of the release of her CD
Melody Without Words (ACME Records). As a recipient of the 1994 DownBeat Magazine Award for her composition "Let's Fool One," and with several big band arrangements published with the University of Northern Colorado Press, she has already gathered international recognition for her writing skills. Herzig has been performing as a professional jazz pianist for over fifteen years and received her Doctorate in Music Education and Jazz Studies from IU Bloomington in 1997.  Currently she teaches Music Theory, Piano, and Jazz Piano at Indiana University/Purdue University Indianapolis.

A complete list of the IU Art Museum's "Jazz in July" series (every Friday in July) can be found on p. 3 of this Newsletter.
The Sunday after Herzig's July 13th performance , JfB is sponsoring two events on the "Emerging Talent Stage" at the Indy  Jazz Festival in Indianapolis. On Sunday, July 15, from 11:30 to noon, the Bloomington Jazz Sextet will play on the "Emerging Talent Stage." The sextet consists of Isaac Laughlin (alto sax), Robert Henson
